Chatting With the Chicks of Chick Lit

Ha ha ha ha welcome, welcome everyone to Chatting With the Chicks of Chick Lit. I’m your host, Chuck Lottateeth, and I am so thrilled to be able to introduce you to some of the most fascinating characters in literature today. I’m talking about the leading ladies of Chick Lit—those enchanting, romantic, darling, sexy, sweet, funny, headstrong—and, let’s face it, sometimes downright frustrating—modern women who headline this fabulously fun genre. I'm sure you're going to love getting the skinny on these “novel” heroines, and who knows? You might just find your new BFF on the pages of one of these books!

Without further ado, please put your hands together and show some love for today's guest, Merryw—<scuffling ensues>—pardon me, please welcome, Meri Palmer. Meri enjoys watching movies, playing video games and—<CL consults notes>—she designs video games for a living. Interesting! Quite the exciting life you lead, Meri. Let’s get started, shall we?

CL: If you were a shoe, what kind of shoe would you be?

MP: What shoe would I be? Are you serious? <CL nods emphatically> Um, I guess I would be a sneaker? <CL prompts for further explanation> Because…it’s comfortable, casual and I can walk to all my favorite places in it, I mean, them. Yep. Definitely a sneaker!

CL: What are the three items you would absolutely need to have with you if you were shipwrecked on a desert island?

MP: Coffee. I cannot function without it. My Yoshi t-shirt—it’s the softest article of clothing I own. <CL looks bored> Oh, uh, and my boyfriend, Morgan. He could help keep me warm. <MP blushes profusely>

CL: If you had only $15 to spend, what would be the perfect date? $50? $5,000?

MP: Hmm. You can’t do much in Manhattan for $15. I would say, head to 2 Bros Pizza and load up on slices. They have such a great variety and everything is delicious. <CL yawns> For $50, I would go for dinner at Anthis, my favorite Greek place. If you’re careful, you can manage dinner for that amount. Food is my favorite part of an evening out, after all. And for $5,000, I would get tickets to She Loves Me starring Zachary Levi and Laura Benanti, have dinner at Erminia—the food and the wine are, um, superb—and spend the night at the Waldorf Astoria.<MP has an enormous grin on her face>

CL: Your best friend is asked to describe you in five words. What would they be? Your nemesis is also asked to describe you in five words. What would they be?

MP: <hesitates> I do my best to avoid having Declan describe me, but I’ll give it a shot. He may be my best friend, but he can be a tad…critical. He would say that I’m kind, um, loyal, cautious, driven and…frumpy. Kind of like Yoda. <CL chokes on his sparkling water> You okay, Chuck?

<MP sighs> Courtney would describe me as a fashion-challenged, gluttonous, high-handed know-it-all with a good heart. Maybe not that last part. <CL can’t hide a giggle>

CL: If you could be the heroine in any chick flick, who would it be and why?

MP: Samantha Baker from Sixteen Candles. I would really love for my family to forget my birthday—Grams always goes overboard—and who wouldn’t want to sit across the table from Jake Ryan? He’s just…incredible. <covers her face in embarrassment following her revelation>
